These behemoths handle an estimated 70% of global internet traffic but strain local transmission grids, leading to wait times of up to 7 years just to get hooked up.
Data center water usage is also a concern; those in Northern Virginia alone consume nearly 2 billion gallons of potable water annually, more than doubling between 2019 and 2023. This isn’t just a matter of comparing data center water use to agricultural or golf course consumption – it’s about recognizing that these facilities drain the very same treated water supply that flows out of household taps.
The tech industry claims their energy demand can be offset by buying massive amounts of clean wind and solar energy, but this ignores the fundamental physics of the electric grid. Wind and solar are intermittent sources of power; AI data centers require constant, uninterrupted electricity to function. As a result, regional utilities must backstop these renewable systems with “firm” power sources – often aging coal plants or new natural gas peaker plants.
The consequences of this infrastructure are far-reaching: every megawatt a data center pulls off the grid is a megawatt not available to a new factory, housing development, or hospital expansion. We’re ceding control over our energy resources to tech giants who prioritize their own interests above all else.
In response, the state of Virginia has recently implemented a 1.1-cent-per-kilowatt-hour tax on data center electricity consumption – allowing these essential facilities while forcing tech companies to pay the true cost of their strain on local communities.
The battle lines over AI’s impact are shifting; rather than pitting economic growth against environmental concerns, we should focus on making its infrastructure accountable. The time has come to acknowledge that AI’s physical footprint is a reality and it’s our responsibility to ensure this infrastructure serves the greater good, not just the interests of tech giants.
The Valley Link Project – a 115-mile, $1 billion transmission line designed solely to feed the exploding data center industry – threatens to slice through historic Civil War battlefields and pristine farmland in central Virginia. This is clear evidence that we’ve reached a tipping point; the era of unchecked expansion has come to an end, and what remains is our capacity for resource accountability.
The future of AI is not virtual; it’s physical – and it’s up to us to ensure its infrastructure serves the planet, not just the profits of tech giants.
