Loopholes and Half Loops: The FDA's GRAS Conundrum The Food and Drug Administration's proposed rule to strengthen oversight of ingredients added to food products is a half measure at best.

Requiring manufacturers to notify the FDA when they deem additives as "generally recognized as safe" (GRAS) is a step in the right direction, but it doesn't address the root issue: the lack of transparency and accountability in the GRAS designation process.

The GRAS loophole has been exploited by food companies for decades, allowing thousands of unstudied chemicals into the nation's food supply.
